Reflexology is a non-intrusive holistic complementary therapy which can be performed on the feet and lower leg, hands or ears. It is believed that these areas, via our nervous system, form a map of our whole body and by manipulating and applying pressure to the reflex points, the body will naturally release blocked energy to bring a person back into balance. It is a holistic treatment to enhance well-being and to promote inner strength. Reflexology is also known as Zone therapy outside of the UK.
A therapist will use various techniques to simulate the reflex points to encourage these pressure sensors to react and send relaxation signals throughout the body. The aim is to stimulate the body’s own healing process.
The human body is amazing. It has its own defence system, cleaning and filtering system, engine and processor. It can reproduce, grow and regenerate. It has the ability to heal from within and can influence how we feel and act. Reflexology tries to unblock areas which are causing discomfort so like any engine it helps the body work to the best of its ability.
It should be noted that Reflexology is not a medical treatment and is not a cure. Reflexology helps balance the body’s systems helping them work more efficiently which in turn speeds up the natural healing process.
Reflexology can be given to any age group and it can be used on people that either just want to relax or have received or are currently receiving medical care. However, there may be occasions where it is unsuitable for a client to receive treatment. It is therefore important to ensure that when you have this type of therapy that you find a qualified reflexologist who will conduct a full consultation prior to conducting any type of treatment.
